In the past few years, four craft breweries, one meadery, and one cidery, have opened in Fredericksburg. In the coming year, two more breweries will open their doors downtown. Fredericksburg has established itself as a premiere destination for local craft beer, and is proud of the award-winning beer that has come out of this city. In addition to these wonderful breweries, a store on Caroline St, Fredericksburg BREW Exchange, is committed to providing patrons with incredible craft beer from all over the country.
BREW Exchange was founded by Michael Ellis, and sells high quality beer from statewide and nationwide breweries. Guests can purchase beer either in cans or in growlers, as a select few beers are always on tap (guests cannot drink the beer in the store). Ellis has lived in Fredericksburg since 2004, and decided to open BREW Exchange after his former business partner came across a similar store in South Carolina.
According to Ellis, the spring and summer bring about a plethora of new sour styled-ales. While sours are always very popular, many breweries distribute new sours during the spring. He also noted that lagers and pilsners become far more popular after the winter, when stouts and porters are much more prominent. However, Ellis said that the most popular beer style year round is the india pale ale, or IPA. These hop-forward beers, Ellis said, are far and above the most popular style. He believes that IPAs will continue to be a juggernaut in the craft beer industry, and will be the dominant style for years to come.
Some of Ellis’ favorite IPAs come from breweries such as Equilibrium and Vitamin Sea. He also recommends Prairie Artisan Ales for stouts. “Anything barrel-aged I like,” Ellis said. Fredericksburg BREW Exchange has countless beers from extraordinary breweries, available for you to enjoy (responsibly, of course).
