Opening Weekend at Ferry Farm and Historic Kenmore

Spring is in the air, and it’s time to welcome the reopening of two of Fredericksburg’s most cherished historical sites—Ferry Farm and Historic Kenmore. Both museums are kicking off the season with special events that promise to immerse visitors in the stories of the past. Mark your calendars for March 1 and 2 to experience “Living History” at Ferry Farm and “Taste Through Time: Bread Talk” at Historic Kenmore.

Opening Weekend Events

Living History at Ferry Farm
Saturday, March 1, 10 AM – 5 PM

Step back in time and witness the skill and craftsmanship of yesteryear during the “Living History” event at Ferry Farm. This interactive day will showcase hands-on activities, live demonstrations, and stories of early American life. One highlight will be a demonstration by Marshall Scheetz of Jamestown Cooperage, who will use traditional techniques to craft barrels, buckets, and more. It’s a rare opportunity to see a master cooper in action.

Also joining the festivities will be the young historians of the 4-H Homesteading Club of Stafford County. They’ll demonstrate traditional homesteading skills and invite guests to roll up their sleeves and try their hand at some historic tasks.

Take a timed, guided tour of the replica Washington House, where you can warm up by the fire and experience George Washington’s boyhood home as it would have looked during the 18th century. This immersive experience is perfect for history enthusiasts and families alike.

Admission:

  • Grounds-Only: $9 for adults, $4 for students ages 6-17, free for children under 6.
  • Admission with Timed House Tour: $12 for adults, $6 for students ages 6-17, free for children under 6. Tickets available on-site or you can book a tour time online for March 1.

Taste Through Time: Bread Talk at Historic Kenmore
Sunday, March 2, 12 PM – 5 PM

If you’ve ever wondered about the history of bread, this event is for you. On Sunday, head to Historic Kenmore for “Taste Through Time: Bread Talk.” Watch a demonstration of 18th-century baking techniques in the Historic Kitchen, where you’ll see bread being baked over an open fire. As you learn about the significance of bread in Colonial America, you’ll also have the chance to sample different varieties of freshly baked bread.

This event is a great way to engage all your senses and learn about the history of one of the oldest foods still enjoyed today.

Admission:

  • Museum & Event Admission: $6 for adults, $3 for students ages 6-17, free for children under 6.
  • Admission with House Tour: $12 for adults, $6 for students ages 6-17, free for children under 6. Tickets available on-site or book a tour time online for March 2.

A Big Anniversary and a New Website

This year, Historic Kenmore is celebrating a monumental milestone: the 250th anniversary of its Great House. Built in 1775, Kenmore has withstood wars, earthquakes, storms, and the ever-changing tides of history. As we celebrate this remarkable 250-year journey, the George Washington Foundation will be sharing special events and social media content that highlights key moments in the house’s past, bringing its rich history to life for both new and returning visitors.

In addition to the exciting Historic Kenmore milestone, the George Washington Foundation has recently launched a brand-new website. The updated site includes new pages focused on archaeology, collections, resources, and preservation efforts, with more content set to be added throughout the year. It’s the perfect place to explore all that these historic sites have to offer.

Whether you’re a long-time history buff or a first-time visitor, the reopening weekend at Ferry Farm and Historic Kenmore offers an unforgettable opportunity to explore the past. Don’t miss these special events celebrating the legacy of these two iconic Fredericksburg landmarks.
