In the mid 1800’s Shiloh Baptist Church was sold to its all Black congregation for a sum of $500. Over the years the church grew and had several name changes. Today there are several Shiloh Baptist churches in the Fredericksburg area. During the Civil War, the original Shiloh Baptist Church served as a hospital for Union soldiers. You can read more about the church’s history of the Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site) history page.
Notable members of the congregation throughout history include enslaved person John Washington (read about his Trail to Freedom) and Reverend Lawrence A. Davies, who served as Pastor and was also the Mayor of Fredericksburg.
