The stone wall well protected the Confederate Army stationed behind it, proving a detrimental end to the Union Army. The Fredericksburg National Cemetery is the resting place for over 15,000 Union soldiers who died in prominent Civil War battles in the Richmond, Washington, D.C, and Fredericksburg area.
