Opening Reception: The Art of Plants within the Patawomeck Community

The Raw, the Cooked, the Sacred, and the Profane: The Art of Plants within the Patawomeck Community
Opening Reception: Friday, November 6, 2026 | 5pm – 7pm

Discover the artistry, traditions and cultural heritage of the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia during a special exhibition at the Fredericksburg Visitor Center.

The Raw, the Cooked, the Sacred, and the Profane: The Art of Plants within the Patawomeck Community explores the deep connections between the Patawomeck people, the natural environment and the plants that have shaped their artistic traditions and cultural identity.

Featuring historic and contemporary artwork and handcrafted objects, the exhibition highlights the creativity, craftsmanship and knowledge passed down through generations, while showcasing how these traditions continue to evolve today.

Organized by Dr. Brad Hatch and David Jett, with assistance from University of Mary Washington students Alessandra Lisio and Aaron Harrell, the exhibition celebrates the Patawomeck community’s enduring relationship with the natural world.

Join us for the Opening Reception!

Stop by during downtown Fredericksburg’s First Friday celebration on November 6, from 5pm – 7pm, to explore the exhibition and learn more about the artwork and its cultural significance.

The exhibition is free and open to the public through Sunday, November 29.
