In conjunction with the exhibition now on display, “Toulouse-Lautrec and Ukiyo-e Prints from the Melchers’ Collection,” we will host this free Virginia Museum of Fine Arts illustrated presentation by museum educator Twyla Kitts.
Why did Ukiyo-e prints resonate so profoundly with artists such as Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, and Toulouse-Lautrec? How did these images of Edo’s “floating world” inspire Impressionist and Post Impressionist artists to explore the many levels of European society, including the Parisian demi-monde? This illustrated adventure will explore the connections between Japanese woodblock prints and the artistic transformations in Western art during the Belle Epoch.
Free, exhibition entrance included.
