Curious about what’s playing this fall? Fredericksburg is packed with live theater over the next few months, from classic musicals to family shows, thrillers, and comedy nights. Here’s your guide to the season’s can’t-miss performances:

Riverside Center for the Performing Arts – The Sound of Music

  • Details: The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the title number, The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars. The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, follows an ebullient postulate who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision.

  • Details: Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking rock musical follows a group of young artists navigating life, love, and loss in New York City during the AIDS crisis. Passionate, raw, and unforgettable.

Riverside Center Children’s Theatre – Junie B. Jones

  • Dates: September 23 – October 25, 2025

    • Shows every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
    • Sensory Friendly Performance October 11.

  • Details: It’s Junie B.’s first day of first grade, and a lot of things have changed for her: Junie’s friend, Lucille, doesn’t want to be her best pal anymore and, on the bus, Junie B. makes friends with Herb, the new kid at school. Also, Junie has trouble reading the blackboard and her teacher, Mr. Scary, thinks she may need glasses. Throw in a friendly cafeteria lady, a kickball tournament and a “Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal,” and first grade has never been more exciting.
