Know Before You Go: Upcoming Closures at Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center and Chatham

Planning a visit to Fredericksburg’s Civil War history sites this summer or fall? Be sure to check out the latest updates—two key National Park Service sites will soon close their doors for scheduled maintenance, but there’s still plenty to explore while the work is underway.

Starting Monday, August 4, 2025, both the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center and Chatham will close for long-term maintenance projects:

  • Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center will be closed for 6–7 months for important upgrades including fire suppression, waterline improvements, and electrical work.

  • Chatham will close for about a year for interior restoration, including lead paint encapsulation, plaster repair, and new carpet installation.

These closures are necessary to protect historic structures and preserve the safety of staff and visitors. The National Park Service will also be carefully relocating all artifacts currently on display as part of the process.

What’s Still Open?

Don’t worry—there’s still a lot to see and do:

  • The Park Store next to the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center will remain open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop in for maps, souvenirs, and helpful info!

    • Park staff will continue offering on-site assistance and battlefield orientation through mid-October, after which staff will be available on a reduced schedule.

  • The Chatham gate (entrance to the grounds) will stay open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, so visitors can continue to enjoy the scenic views and gardens.

  • Explore the battlefield trails and outdoor exhibits—many are self-guided and well-marked.

  • Visit other area Civil War sites such as the Sunken Road or Marye’s Heights.

While these closures may shift your itinerary slightly, they’re part of a long-term effort to preserve Fredericksburg’s historic treasures for generations to come.
