Dog-Friendly Parks

Some best dog experiences can be found at the region’s parks. On the National Park Service’s Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park you can take in the history, while your pooch prances in the wilderness. Chancellorsville Battlefield and the trails off Lee Drive, both in Spotsylvania County, are ideal hikes that can be tailored to any level of endurance.

Old Mill Park has plenty of room for both the two-legged and four-legged members of your family to run around.  Picnic shelters and grills are available to rent for the great family picnic in the park.

Tip: Don’t forget to bring bags and pick up after your dog, so the parks can be enjoyed by the next visitor. Also make sure to keep your dog on a leash, even if they want to run free and explore.

And the Fredericksburg Rappahannock River Heritage Trail is a scenic marvel for you, and easy exercise for your dog. There are multiple points along the trail where Fido can take a dip.

Fredericksburg’s Mott’s Run Reservoir Recreation Area also has trails with water featured. You and your dog can forge a stream together, looking for adventure in the woods.

Tip: Driving back from a canine adventure? Any of the regions Starbucks Coffee’s is happy to make a “pupaccino” for tired canines in need of a jolt. It’s just whipped cream in a cup.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants

Downtown Fredericksburg has many sidewalk cafes where you can dine, and your dog can relax.  Sammy T’s on Caroline Street is on a busy corner with lots for your dog to watch and smell and they always has water out for those dining with them or those dogs passing by. Tip: Always ask before sitting down if the outdoor tables are suitable for pets.

The store specializes in pet nutrition, and offers a wide variety of toys, treats and other pet goods. Your dog is welcome to come in and shop alongside you. They also have a grooming service for your dog to enjoy a day of pet pampering.
