Once you get a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower from I-95, you know that the fun is about to begin. Now that Kings Dominion has opened for the season, guests from across the East Coast will flock to the beloved amusement park in Doswell, Virginia. Whether you are riding the thrilling Project 305 or Dominator roller coasters, enjoying Planet Snoopy with your youngsters, or relaxing in the brand-new VIP Lounge for Prestige Pass holders, there is endless fun to behold at Kings Dominion. And if you are looking to make a weekend out of your trip to the park, particularly if you are traveling from north of Doswell, there is one city, above all others, for you to stay in and experience: Fredericksburg.
Fredericksburg is located about 35-40 minutes north of Kings Dominion, right off I-95. This richly historical city has grown and flourished in the last decade, with new businesses such as breweries, art galleries, and boutique stores opening throughout downtown. It has also has a number of pristine hotels open in downtown and the nearby Central Park, which are perfect to book for your Kings Dominion trip. Courtyard Marriott downtown is a gorgeous addition to Caroline Street, and up on William Street, The Publisher will soon open. There are also some wonderful hotels located in Central Park, including Extended Stay, Hilton Garden Inn, and Hampton Inn. And if you are looking for a cozy, unique stay in Fredericksburg, Historic Kenmore Inn bed & breakfast is lovely and hospitable (it also helps that a bourbon tasting room, Ironclad Inn, recently opened on the first floor). There are plenty of lodging options in Fredericksburg, which will make your weekend (or week) trip to Kings Dominion so much more accessible.
When you wake up in Fredericksburg, keep in mind that Kings Dominion does not open until 11am on weekends. If you have some time before making your way down, there are plenty of ways to enjoy a quiet morning in Fredericksburg. Check out one of Fredericksburg’s fantastic brunch spots, such as Rehana’s, Mason-Dixon Cafe, or Sunken Well Tavern. You can also explore the Fredericksburg National Battlefield, where you can walk and learn of the infamous, somber Battle of Fredericksburg. Take an early morning hike along the Rappahannock River, and take pictures as the sun comes up over Chatham Bridge. Or, simply walk the streets of downtown Fredericksburg, and take in the history and beauty of this incredible city. Then, once you are ready to make the quick trip, head on down to Kings Dominion!
But, at some point after your 10th ride on Twisted Timbers, you may be looking for a break from the thrills of the theme park. That is why, once you are mellowed out from Kings Dominion for the day, head back up to Fredericksburg to enjoy a relaxing evening. Hit one of the niche, local stores that you can only find in downtown Fredericksburg such as Peacaloo Boutique, Riverby Books, or Duly Noted. Enjoy a phenomenal dinner at Foode, Sammy T’s, Harry’s Downtown, Orofino, or any of the other revered, chef-owned restaurants in downtown. Partake in a late evening drink at Red Dragon Brewery, Curio Wine Bar, or Wild Hare Cider Pub. And, if you can muster the energy, experience the nightlife of Fredericksburg at Brock’s Riveside Grill, Billiken’s Smokehouse, or The Sky Bar at Castiglia’s. There are great times to be had during an evening in Fredericksburg.
“A destination in its own right with its vibrant downtown, restaurants, breweries, and other amenities, Fredericksburg is a perfect place for families to visit, and a wonderful city to explore and combine with your next visit to the park,” Geoff Zindren, Director of Public Relations for Kings Dominion, said.
There is no better way to spend a trip than to begin the day with breakfast at Eileen’s Bakery or brunch at Sedona Taphouse, spend the day riding Shenandoah Lumber Company, Tumbili and Americana Ferris Wheel, and end the day with dinner at The Alpine Chef, a nightcap at Cheeky’s Cocktails, and a stay at a Fredericksburg hotel. Fredericksburg is the perfect city to couple with your trip to Kings Dominion, and as you plan your summer trip, we hope you will consider staying in, and experiencing, this wonderful locality.
