Fredericksburg Welcomes the Marine Corps Historic Half

Each spring, as the streets of Fredericksburg come alive with color, thousands of runners from across the country descend on our historic city—not just for a race, but for a tradition.

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon returns, bringing an electrifying atmosphere, the resolute spirit of the U.S. Marines, and a chance to run through more than 300 years of American history.            Marine Corp Historic Half Medals

More Than a Race—It’s a Journey Through Time

The 13.1-mile course isn’t just scenic—it’s storied. From the colonial charm of historic downtown to the hallowed grounds where Civil War battles once raged, the Historic Half leads runners on a path where the past and present meet stride for stride. And then there’s Hospital Hill—a name that strikes both fear and pride in the hearts of past participants. This formidable incline near the end of the course tests your grit, but with numerous spectators lining the hill to cheer you on, quitting isn’t an option.

As with all Marine Corps races, this event is as much about spirit and service as it is about speed. Whether you’re running your first half marathon or your fiftieth, you’ll be inspired at every mile by the energy of the crowd, the dedication of your fellow runners, and the encouragement of the U.S. Marines standing shoulder to shoulder with you on the sidelines.

Race weekend kicks off with the Semper Fred 5K on Saturday, May 17. This fun and festive run welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. It’s the perfect warm-up for the big race—or a great alternative for families and spectators who want to get in on the action.
